The third version of the Monitor Music Awards has chosen Cartagena as its official satellite venue and will pay tribute to champeta.
Germán González, director of the awards, announced in a press conference held in the city that “for the first time the champeta will be included as an independent genre in this important musical award”.
Ana María González, adviser to the Office of International Cooperation, also said that “it is a giant step in the internationalization of this rhythm in the city. It consolidates us as a music industry like Puerto Rico or the Republic Dominican”.
The nomination gala will take place on September 8 at Plaza de la Aduana, and will feature the participation of many champeta representatives such as Mr. Black, Twister El Rey, Kevin Flórez, GiBlack, Criss y Ronny, Young F, Zaider and DJ Dever.
The nominees’ reading will be broadcast simultaneously in more than 18 countries on the most important television and cable networks in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean.
With these awards, the organizers seek to put champeta as a genre on the international map and this champeta has its own nomination and its own genre to be known to the world.
Champeta singer Mister Black said participating in the Monitor Music Awards represents putting the music genre into orbit around the world. “It’s one more point for the history, of our music and our champeta culture,” he added.
Dj Dever, composer, singer and producer of champeta, expressed his pride and joy in representing the ‘champetúa’ culture in front of the international gaze: “They will say: champeta, what is it? will find a range of colors and sounds that will please more than one, they will identify with this seasoning, with this rhythm that carries the champeta in its DNA”.
The 2022 Monitor Music Awards will also honor vallenato singers Jorge Oñate and Diomedes Díaz.
