On the way to Eternals, we were ready for some kind of love triangle between Sersi (Gemma Chan), her immortal compatriot Ikaris (Richard Madden) and her human boyfriend Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) to be the focus of the film. And while that’s somewhat true, now that we’ve seen the movie, many Marvel fans are claiming that another couple is stealing the show from their main romantic story arc. Namely, Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) and Druig (Barry Keoghan).
With 10 Eternals to feature, the Speedster and Telepath don’t have a lot of split-screen time, but the duo have made a big impact on audiences nonetheless. Ridloff’s Makkari – the MCU’s very first deaf superhero – was already destined to be a fan favorite, but his unlikely and adorable connection to Keoghan’s dark Druig turns out to be an unexpected highlight of the film for many.
Fans can’t get enough of the way Druig hates everyone except Makkari.
Let’s not forget another underrated couple: Gilgamesh and Thena.
It’s not how much time you spend in front of the screen that matters, it’s how you use it.
It should be noted that this was not the originally part of the plan to have these two characters romantically involved. Director Chloe Zhao was impressed with the chemistry between Ridloff and Keoghan during the casting phase and changed the script in an effort to give them a chance to show it off in the film itself. This explains why their dynamics are not a big part of the story.
The good news is that their bond may have more significance in the future, given the film’s ending – not to mention its much-discussed post-credits scene. So there’s a good chance we’ll bring Makkari and Druig together more in the future of the MCU. Waiting for, Eternals is playing in theaters now.
