“I Came By (2022)” is an English thriller thriller that teeters close with a high heartbeat throughout the film, depicting a poetic rhythm of dichotomies and irony. The narrative is intertwined with a beautiful tonality of opposites. Two graffiti artists note that something is wrong if a famous High Court judge resigns at the last minute. When an artist has a separate mission in mind, Toby finds something spooky in the basement. What he discovers changes his future in the most unfortunate way.
Toby and Jay follow a supposed identity of an inner conscience leading to the argument that privilege is overrated and needs to be mastered. Through careful planning, they found a way to gain access to any elitist’s home to “tag” their walls and notify owners of their presence. In England, graffiti is an offense by the law of the land (unless you’re Banksy). When Toby stays ahead and maintains his usual marking after Jay steps down, a sound in the basement of the recently resigned High Court judge’s house makes him doubt if he is really alone in the house. After finding out he wasn’t, his world turns vicious to make everyone close to him wonder if the fight he was fighting was legitimate.
I Came By (2022) Plot Summary and Movie Synopsis :
A conniving judge, two righteous graffiti writers and a lost mother.
Jay and Toby have a brotherly relationship. Every day, they embark on “missions” to spray their “I Came By” tag in affluent homes otherwise inaccessible. When this news spreads in the community newspaper, Jay’s girlfriend Naz makes her pregnancy known. Jay reconsiders his position in life and informs Toby that they can no longer work together. This upsets Toby and thinks they should continue. Jay respectfully steps down, but Toby pursues his “goal”.
Toby is a relentlessly angry individual, portraying the classic rebel syndrome. With a dysfunctional relationship between him and his mother, he struggles every day to feel at home or fit into the community. He’s a joker, seeking justice with no army to back him up. His vulnerability shows when he tries to tag Judge Hector Blake’s house, and in the dark, he hears a loud thump. Toby’s mother, Lizzie, is a psychiatrist who has a patient named Faisal. Faisal is a medical student who tries to kill himself but is a brilliant hacker on the side. Her “motherly” relationship with Faisal is the relationship she should have with her son, but with emotions still running high, Lizzie makes the wrong decision.
High Court Judge Hector Blake is a dangerous man. His close friend is a policeman, who always plays squash with him at 9 p.m. After Jay sends Toby the model number of a modem, they decide that Blake’s house is next to be hit. Blake is unaware that his life is about to change. Omid is a man who has been in Blake’s forced detention since he was a young boy. Emaciated and bludgeoned, his body is a skeleton. The torture and severe abuse are evident. Desperate to be heard, Omid continues to knock on the door where he is trapped forever, every minute of every day. Blake has a noisy washing machine downstairs in that same basement to mask the noise. With this deep and dark story to keep alive, Blake maintains a strict security system in place and always makes sure people leave their shoes at the door to maintain the hygiene of the house (with the dark possibility of never back to their shoes).
What does Toby do to help Omid?
Director Babak Anvari expertly portrays an engaging tale of two writers who change their town by demonstrating how justice can be served more effectively when done in secret. When Toby begins to leave alone, he carefully turns off Judge Hector Blake’s security system. Things change after he enters the residence as he hears a loud noise in the basement. He comes across images of a boy lying on a bed with a sheet covering his lower half. Again, there is a punch. Shortly after this sound, he discovers a hidden door with a peephole. After running through it, he is sent back in shock and fear. He must come back.
The opinion of a particular YouTube influencer constantly lingers in Toby’s mind. With the right attitude, he knows it can’t be a secret anymore. He goes to Jay and tries to tell him that he needs his brother’s support, but Jay turns him down after dealing with Naz’s parents. Toby decides to do his duty as an ordinary citizen. He calls 911 and reports it. With a charge as serious as this, the police follow up on the call. Two officers show up at Judge Blake’s residence. They do their check and go back to their car without stopping it. This dramatically irritates Toby. His only concern is to get this man out.
With any luck, Toby returns to the property. This time he reaches the basement door and has a chance to open it. When he does, he sees Omid bleeding and naked on a mattress. He tries to get him out and takes him up the stairs. But Blake shows up at the door and Toby has to think quickly. He comes back and puts Omid back in that cave, but Omid reaches out, pulls him back and begs him to be saved. When Omid pees himself, Toby assures him that he will take him out. When Toby escapes and hides in a closet in the basement, Blake enters the cellar to find Omid who has peed himself. Toby takes the opportunity to pick up a hammer from the workshop and rushes over to Blake to hit him in the back of the head. Much to his dismay, he trips and falls flat on his cheekbone. When Blake sees his intruder, he hits him with a wooden bat. Then we see him pour ashes down the drain and flush it.
I Came (2022) Movie Ending, Explained:
What does Jay do to get Judge Hector Blake arrested?
Jameel Benjamin Agassi, aka Jay, has found a new reason to start over. Doing odd jobs here and there, he visits luxurious houses. He visits Blake’s house and enters it looking for a toilet, but he is looking for the security system modem. With his buddy Toby in the lead, he sends Toby a picture of the modem’s model number. As he lays down the next move, he returns home to tell Naz, Blake’s girlfriend. She tells him that he is a Saint. But also tells her that she is pregnant. Suddenly, his life changes.
When Toby goes missing, Lizzie gets in touch with him to try to get him to come when a police officer inquires about the last time they spoke. Jay decides to go to Blake and collect his mail. Finding an envelope, he takes it with him, but the police find it. After authorization, he goes to Toby. With a copy of the set of keys, he walks in and puts the envelope in Toby’s drawer. Lizzie hears it and runs upstairs, thinking Toby is back.
Although we don’t know how much time has passed, Lizzie heals herself to calm her nerves and sometimes can’t think clearly. When they take out all her stuff, she finds the envelope. This piques her interest and she immediately takes it to the police officer in charge of the case. Detective Ella takes on Toby’s case, calling it a missing person’s case. She goes through her log and finds the 911 call recorded at the address. Detective Ella begins her investigation and Lizzie returns home to do her research on the Internet.
As Lizzie slowly descends into madness, trying to find answers about Toby, she goes to Blake’s residence and waits outside his door. After hissing a sarcastic comment in Detective Ella’s ears, she arrests him, but Blake’s old connection to the police releases him. Lizzie is deeply discouraged to find out but continues her watchful behavior outside of Blake’s house. This pays off when she finds a young boy escaping from the window of Blake’s house only to learn that his drink was spiked and he felt unsafe. She understands that he could be a sexual predator.
She tries to get inside the house to find Toby. When she does, Blake finds her and there is a fight. She is tied to a pipe, and he dismembers the Young Boy’s body in front of her so that he can fit into the kiln (which his wife used, who was a ceramist). His body is burned along with his driver’s license, and now only Jay remains. Jay starts calling Lizzie’s phone and never gets through. After a while, he passes by and discovers the messy house with rotten fruit. He understands that something has gone very wrong.
This time, it’s up to him to do the right thing. Jay begins to formulate a plan and goes through all the research Lizzie has collected. When he does, Naz meets him in time to tell him that Blake will give a speech at his university and might read his thesis. After his lecture, Blake leaves the college and Jay follows him to the new location. After finding out that Blake has moved out, Omid must be close to him. This is his chance. Jay heads to Blake’s estate to get answers to Toby and Lizzie’s disappearance. Jay and Blake get into a nasty fight, and Jay ties him up with duct tape. He limps down to the basement, frees Omid and flees. Beaten and bleeding, he goes home to Naz and the baby. Omid is saved and Detective Ella rejoices to see Judge Hector Blake beaten and bleeding. The wall of his house reads: “I Came By”.
Last Words on I Came (2022)
Director and screenwriter Babak Anvari with Namsi Khan delivers a fantastically balanced English thriller with a chilling narrative. There were subtle ideas of opposites. Where the rich are privileged, the system creates bitter poverty. The system opposes poverty but does nothing to improve it. Lizzie develops with Faisal to crack a USB key password.
Jay is the only person seen at the start to have met Hector Blake and comes out in one piece as a friend. On the contrary, no one else has ever managed to come out and see the light of day. Yet, in the end, we say that Jay is the only one left limping but alive. The undercurrent of irony is so thick that it fills the story and brings a healthier narrative. With the editing in focus, the deadlines were very vague. It could have been over seven days with rotten fruit. Nonetheless, the film sticks in the mind and gives enough chills to wonder, what would you do if such a person existed?
