Music “Six Picks”: The best of local music this weekend – Atwater-Donnell, Ali McGuirk and Daughtry


There is much more than football this weekend. Who needs lip-synched halftime shows to stir up controversy anyway? Below we have some of the best music picks in local music this weekend.

Friday: A twin bill of Pure League of the Prairies and the Atlanta Rhythm Section arrives at the Stadium Theater in Woonsocket for a show Friday night at 8 p.m. We won’t leave you with earworms, but just say, “Amieeee, I’m so into you.” Tickets available here.

Friday: Boston Music Prize Winner Ali McGuirk returns to Warren’s Galactic Theater at 9 p.m. with his trio of Jeremy Moses Curtis on bass and Mike Castellana on guitar. She’s really good and booked to play Boston Calling in May… the kid is going far! Details here.

On Saturday: RI-based roots duo Atwater Donnelly are playing Pump house music in Wakefield on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. The duo are known internationally for their blend of traditional American and Celtic folk music and dance, as well as original song and poetry. Details here.

Saturday: Girl returns to the Mohegan Sun Arena Saturday evening at 8 p.m. Behind former American Idol finalist Chris Daughtry, the group will likely have a few from their latest album Dearly Beloved. A few places are still available. Details here.

Saturday Sunday: jazz trumpeter Doug Woolverton is well known in these regions for his stint in Roomful of Blues, in addition to his national tours supporting artists like Aretha Franklin and Warren Haynes. On Saturday: Shake it up Saturday night at the Parlor in Providence with three of the area’s top bands. 10 dollars for three bands, Crooked Coast, The Z-Boys and special guest Jesse the tree …the best deal in town! Details here.
