Costs is just such a movie.
With normal peopleby Daisy Edgar-Jones and Captain America‘s Sebastian Stan in the lead roles, it begins as an endearing rom-com that’s sparked by a cute encounter at a grocery store. We would have happily watched two hours of this as the pair share strong chemistry, but Costs is not this movie.
As director Mimi Cave (in her feature debut) drops a brilliant delayed title sequence 30 minutes later, Costs takes a turn for the mess and you watch in horror as it unfolds. It won’t lose its impact if you know exactly what to expect, but there’s no doubt you’ll get more out of it when you enter with… fresh eyes.
Our only word of warning, it’s probably best not to eat a full meal before watching.
We will preserve the mystery of Costsis a big reveal, but let’s dive deeper into the setup. Frustrated with dating apps and bad dates, Noa (Edgar-Jones) decides to try his luck with charming Steve (Stan) when he tries to flirt with vegetables.
It doesn’t take long for Noa to fall in love with Steve and despite her best friend Mollie’s (Jonica T Gibbs) skepticism, Noa accepts his invitation for a romantic weekend. Before you can say “that’s a TERRIBLE idea”, Noa finds herself in a situation straight out of anyone’s worst nightmare.
Cave certainly drops hints in the film’s first act of what’s to come, like lots of extreme close-ups of mouths. Combined with Steve seeming right too good to be true, you won’t be surprised if it turns out to be a fake. However, the execution of the twist and the way the movie unfolds in all the gruesome detail is excellent.
There are times when you might want to look away in horror from the situation Noa finds herself in, but Sebastian Stan comes across as so charming even when we know Steve’s true intentions. As he dances through the halls of his gorgeous home, you can totally imagine yourself being looked after by him.
Daisy Edgar-Jones is just as magnetic as Noa and just as the plot would have you guess, so is she. As Noa adjusts to her new reality, you’ll wonder if she really was taken care of by Steve or if she’s playing an even better game than him. You never know where Costs goes, keeping you engrossed throughout.
His comedic timing is also perfect because, here’s the thing, Costs is often very funny. It’s dark humor, of course, because there’s nothing inherently comic about the situation itself. Still, the dark laughs from Lauryn Kahn’s sharp script continue to pour in, serving to heighten the surreal vibe and keep things from getting too heavy.
It’s a bit of a shame that things settle into a more conventional rhythm in the final third. We get another outstanding dance routine with Noa and Steve, but otherwise we’re firmly in standard thriller territory. There’s catharsis in the finale, but it all feels a little too polished for the above.
Everything else is too good to let the finale derail the whole movie. With a lot of visual style and two superb main performances, Costs is a surprisingly twisted treat of a thriller you won’t want to miss.
