Happy Birthday AR Rahman: Do we really need to introduce to you this wonderful individual named AR Rahman, aka the Musical Deity! There is no voice like his, one you want to hear over and over again, a voice that speaks volumes, a voice that has done wonders for the industry since he first entered it. . “I am an instrument,” he once said and there is no contrary to that. Rahman has so much music in him that he has created some amazing compositions with his talent. Even when the entire industry faced the wrath of COVID-19, Rahman’s music stuck with us and shone through all the gloom.
So, while treating your ears, let’s dive into some of the music Rahman has crafted:
RIHAAYI DE – MIMI
There’s one track that becomes Rahman’s signature work, the highlight of the show, in pretty much every movie that credits the Music Director with his soundtrack. We’ve all learned to anticipate that this song will be performed by Rahman’s incredible voice over the years. For the Netflix movie Mimi, Rihaayi De is that track. The song has a vibe very similar to Tu bin Bataye or Khoon Chala from Rang de Basanti. The slow harmonies that perfectly complement Rahman’s voice, as well as the rhythm of the cheers with each beat, make it more of a journey than a song.
TAARE GINN – DIL BECHARA
Dil Bechara announces the arrival of a Rahman musical that resonates deeply on first listen, a relatively rare occurrence for a musician whose works have a reputation for “growing on you.” around the free voice of Mohit Chauhan. This song can be called a “duet”, but it is not structured like most are, with male and female singers speaking in turn. The voices of women and men are stacked on top of each other in this scenario, and we hear them virtually simultaneously, providing interesting listening.
CHAKA CHAK – ATRANGI RE
After Raanjhanaa, this was Rahman’s second collaboration with Aanand L. Rai, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil. Chaka Chak is a folk-classical song. It was the first track to digitally come out of this film. The song is based on Carnatic music and Shreya Ghoshal lent her voice for it. Rahman composed this song with Sara Ali Khan’s offscreen behavior in mind. He is the music maestro who not only extracts the most musical notes, but also the actor who will perform on that particular track.
O AASHIQA – 99 SONGS
Rahman’s musical effort is made with love and dedication to his craft, and the only things that are constant throughout. Unlike Rahman’s previous works, this album allowed him to explore music, song, and storytelling. This album has 14 tracks, the name of O Aashiqa standing out as the best. The song, written in homage to a lover who seems to be half-muse and half-divine, mixes moderate sensuality and frightening devotion. The vocals and the production start slowly and turn into a happy crescendo.
DIL BECHARA / FRIENDZONE – DIL BECHARA
Rahman songs can be roughly divided into three categories: motivational / patriotic songs like Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera by Swades, love duets like Tere Bina (Guru), and downright fun songs like Columbus (Jeans). Friendzone, Dil Bechara’s title song, falls in the third zone, and Rahman undoubtedly had the pleasure in his vocals that the song demanded. The song called for a precise balance between lazy and jazzy, and Rahman kept his promises.
There are also captivating lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya and exquisite dance moves by Sushant Singh Rajput to accompany it.
