I love rhythm games and have played a lot of Guitar Hero and Rock band to grow. It was a little sad when the Rock band the house party ceased to be a thing, and although rhythm games may have fallen from the general public’s eye, they found new life as the star of the virtual reality series. Games like Beat the saber are must-have games for many that show both what virtual reality is capable of and are used as an exercise program. I’m always looking to add a new rhythm set to my training, and God of riffs looked exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately, it still has a bit of a way to go before replacing Beat the saber in my queue.
God of riffs is a virtual reality rhythm game. You play as a warrior fighting hordes of skeletal warriors in fantastic settings. You wield two axes, one red and one blue, used to send enemies of similar color. Sometimes enemies will emerge from their glowing gold Hellish Rifts, and the only way to defeat them is to strike them with both axes. And sadly, it’s about as exciting as the gameplay is. Red and blue enemies always appear on the correct side, so you never have to worry about crossing your axes – and there are only two types of enemies: a short skeleton that runs towards you and a flying skeleton that flies directly towards you. And that’s all. As I played I wondered why the skeletons were all so short, but it’s easy to hit them on the forehead to knock them over. This is what it feels like: despite the handling of the axes, we have the impression that everything is clubbed.
There have been great innovations in VR rhythm games, but unfortunately, God of riffs is a disappointing game. The most exciting mechanic was a bug: the axes were upside down to me, which made me feel like I was using some kind of sneaky weapon – a very ninja feeling, but not exactly the feeling the developers were after. . In fact, the happy accident of my axes being upside down was perhaps the most fun I’ve had with God of riffs– and that was only because it was so unusual.
Right now in Early Access you have four tracks available, with four different levels to play. Each track, strangely, only has two difficulty levels, although there is a grayed out option for a third. I would have really appreciated this third level of difficulty, because God of riffs is the easiest rhythm game I have ever played. In fact, it took a little more than vibrating my controllers at the marching Skeleton Warriors to send them easily. Talk about disappointment.
God of riffs is a bummer. It goes into Early Access tomorrow, but I suggest you stay away until more tracks are added and the mechanics are refined. God of riffs is still in development, and according to their Early Access info box, development is scheduled for the next 2-3 months, which in my opinion is just not enough to add a lot more content and resolve its issues. gameplay issues.
