Shudder’s new horror movie from a terrified director

Terrified is one of the best horror films of the 2010s, and the director’s next project is on the horizon. When Demian Rugna’s Evil Lurks was acquired by streaming service Shudder for international distribution.

The monster film, about two brothers from a small village who try to prevent a man infected with demons from giving to “evil itself”, is Rugna’s fifth film. Shudder released his latest film, Terrified – Argentina’s title Aterrados – in 2018 and received critical acclaim, and the two sides want to continue working together. “We are delighted to continue our relationship with the team that brought Terrified to Shudder’s audience,” Emily Gotto, vice president of acquisitions and co-productions at Shudder, told Variety. “When Evil Lurks has an amazing storyline and we’re thrilled to be partners from this early stage as an original production of Shudder.”

The photo, set to begin shooting in March 2022 for a possible release later in the year, concerns two brothers from a small village who have discovered a man “infected” with demons who appears to be on the verge of spawning more. of badness. By trying to get rid of the monstrosity, they also make everything considerably worse.

“When Evil Lurks is a double challenge for me and for the viewer – complex to stage and also very hard on anyone watching it,” Rugna said. “I needed to get out of the blueprint of a contained production to break with everything. This film will be my relief, a release of disturbing images that have accumulated in my head over the years like a pressure cooker.

Fernando Diaz produces with Rugna, after working on Terrified. When Evil Lurks will be the feature debut of La Puerta Roja, a new production company of Machaco Films by Diaz and Aramos Cine by Roxana Ramos.

“We try to tell a macabre story with an extremely oppressive and realistic atmosphere, but with a breakneck pace, without giving up a strong narrative,” Diaz added in a statement. “An authentic universe that re-signifies the stories of evil and curses.”

Not much else is revealed, but it looks like When Evil Lurks will be similar to Terrified in that it takes place in Argentina and examines the culture and society of the South American country.
