Touhou Danmaku Kagura Rhythm Game Will End Service


Touhou Danmaku Kaguraa rhythm game based on the popular Touhou series, stop. Developer UnknownX announced the shutdown during a live event on July 18, 2022. The game itself will shut down on October 28, 2022, approximately fourteen months after its launch on August 4, 2021. It never received international exit.

twitter user @DanmakuFRa fan-run news account focused on Touhou Danmaku Kagura, posted translated screenshots of the announcement. These included messages from UnknownX Vice President Tomohiro Ueda and Commander-in-Chief Jyunya. The messages thanked the players for their support and explained some of the reasoning behind the decision. Although more than 5 million players have downloaded the game since its launch, sales have been “well below” expected levels. Despite attempts to increase sales through promotions and updates, things haven’t changed. A plan to keep service at a “heavily reduced” level was ultimately rejected, as it would not match the desired level of service. UnknownX also thanked Touhou Project ZUN creator.

In the meantime, players can continue to enjoy Touhou Danmaku Kagura until its end. UnknownX will continue to add new songs, characters, and maps, and hold scheduled events.

Danmaku Kagura is a rhythm game in the vein of mobile rhythm titles like Bang Dream! Girl group party. The gameplay consists of queuing songs selected from Touhou Project licensed titles and music and notes struck to the beat of the music. Players acquire new characters through a gacha system to form their parties. Groups grant score advantages and other effects when triggered during gameplay.

Touhou Danmaku Kagura will be available in Japanese iOS and Android stores until October 28, 2022. Another mobile spin-off from the franchise, Touhou Lost Wordreceived an international release in 2021.
